Tasty Remedy

I've noticed in the last couple of weeks that I don't seem to be producing quite enough milk for Delilah at certain times of the day. We tried supplementing with a couple different kinds of formula but little miss has an extremely sensitive tummy and spends all night throwing up whenever we give her a bottle. Her pediatrician suggested that we try Nutramigen (which my sister calls "liquid gold" because it's so expensive) but apparently she doesn't like the taste of it because she refuses to eat it. So anyway, I started looking online for some suggestions on how to increase milk supply. I came across several articles indicating that many women claim eating about a cup of oatmeal a day works for them. Well I already eat oatmeal every morning for breakfast but it's only 1/3 cup. I also eat yogurt almost everyday with granola sprinkled on top but it still doesn't amount to one cup. One of the suggestions given in the articles was to bake oatmeal cookies and snack on a few of those throughout the day. What a wonderful excuse to eat cookies. After all, it's for the health of my baby right? Now I don't want anyone raining on my parade. If you happen to know either from experience or just plain common sense that this doesn't really work, please don't tell me. Let me live in blissful ignorance!

By the way, several articles also mention getting adequate sleep. Um, hello! I have a newborn baby and 2 other young children, how is that possible? Also beer, yep you read that right. I never would've thought that beer & breastfeeding were a good mix. Don't think I'll be trying that one. =)

Hollie,
I love the way you put things. your humor is so great! I enjoyed our night with the girls the other night, we need to do it more! I say go for the cookies by the way! Who needs an excuse! But hey if you have a good reason nothin should stop ya! I can't believe by the way that you only eat 1/3 cup oatmeal in the morning, no wonder you are a rail! Love ya,

Emily

Fenugreek supplements or Fenegreek tea I hear is a real winner. And keep on nursing her even if you think she's not getting what she needs-they say this builds up the milk supply because it proves to your body the demand is higher for the milk. Get in touch with your local hospital lactation specialists. They worked miracles for my baby and my morale. There is so much pressure wanting to provide the best for your baby. ALso La Leche League is a good place...Good luck, it's hard work!!

I would never burst your bubble to have cookies! I don't know if it works, but I hope it does so A) the little miss can get enough to keep her full and B) so you can keep having cookies!

I found that more fattening foods help me produce more milk so go for it! I also use a double pump. I didn't figure out that one until my 3rd child. I'll tell you thy work wonders! I highly recommend them. They do cost a bit. That's why I didn't get one right away, but it's well worth it. Good Luck! and thanks for visiting me the other night, I really needed that.

I say go for it sweetie, every day at around 3:30 lock all the kids in the closet, turn on Jerry Springer, put about six cookies on a plate, and pour your self an ice cold beer (none of that "light" stuff either) and take a half hour to replenish, and rejuvenate.

Ok so I wish I had done my research when I was trying to keep up mu supply for Evan. I would have gladly eaten cookies everyday for that. My olny suggestion to help you would be to pump once or twice a day on top of feeding her. After a few days or even a week of this your supply should increase. Also increase your calorie intake. You might also think about keeping a food diary. And see if you are getting enough food yourself. Love ya keep up the good work. Its all worth it in the end; even if you have to sacrifice and eat a few cookies each day! what a trooper you are!;-)
